What Else Will You Be Doing this Summer?

I started out this summer as a riverman, with a kayak trip down the Willimantic (with Mr. Welden), and then a canoe trip down the Farmington with my wife.  And I'll be running and biking, although I am having some trouble coming back from my Achilles' surgery last fall.

I'll be working on my yard and garden, which I enjoy doing.  I'll be watching the Red Sox out on my screen porch, and at Fenway one more time, and I may get out to Beehive Field in New Britain for a little minor league baseball.

On the cultural side, there's always the Sunken Garden Poetry Festival.  I may be there.  Feel free to come up and say "hi!".

Highlights are July 20th for the music -- Eric Bibb, and August 4th for the poetry -- Mark Doty.  I'll have to miss Mark Doty, unfortunately, as I'll be away for a week at the Cape.

What will you all be up to?

  1. I will hopefully doing lots of rock climbing. I'll be making good use of my passes to the Hadley and Worcester gyms and maybe even taking a trip with my brother to Pennsylvania to climb. I'll also be busy with cross country practices and the TYSCT play practices. I'm also helping with the turtle research project in Shenipsit Lake with some other Tolland students. Lastly, I'm reading my summer reading books and posting here. :)

  2. Today was officially my first day off of the summer. I spent this day celebrating my grandparents' 65th wedding anniversary with my family. The first half of my summer has been bombarded with baseball and work. Thankfully, for the remainder of this summer I will be spending the majority of my time looking at schools and working. My family and I are planning on spending a weekend in Baltimore or Washington D.C. for college tours within the next few weeks. Then my family and I will be spending a week in Wells, Maine for our yearly vacation to conclude the summer.

  3. My summer has been a summer of working. I'm a lifeguard at Crandall's pond and have had only one day off since the school year ended. Next week our family was going to go to Minnesota visit family and attend my cousin's wedding but of course my brother has to be the district 8 champions of Little Leage All-Stars. So starting next week the family will be taking a trip down to the Mystic area to watch all of his games down there (maybe a trip to the aquarium too if I get my way).

  4. The majority of my summer is going to be spent working at Skungamaug Golf Course, and running summer practices for our cross country team. This past week my family and I went down to Baltimore to visit Johns Hopkins, Virginia to see the University of Virginia and the College of William and Mary, and then to D.C. to visit American University, George Washington University, and Georgetown University. It was interesting to be in the car for that long with my family, but it was good to be away from all the craziness here. I hope to at least go down to the beach one day, and have a camping trip with our cross country team.

  5. This summer has been fun so far. My time has mostly been spent working at the Crandall's camp in Tolland and traveling with my AAU basketball team to different tournaments mostly around New England. I spent the past two weekends at Penn State and in Washington DC for basketball. Working as a counselor turned out to be easier than I thought it would be because the kids are a lot of fun. This week I get to chase around fourteen boys going into kindergarten through the second grade. There won't be much sitting around during the day.

  6. And Katie I played two of my games this weekend in DC at American University! I thought it was a gorgeous school.

  7. Before the official last day of school (June 27th), I started work as a Teen Leader, T.L. at Windham-Tolland 4-H Camp in Pomfret. This is my third year as a T.L., so i'm now known as a Super A.T.L. (the 'A' is for advanced). T.L.'s are like junior counselors, so we help out in activities and we get to choose how many weeks we want to go. It's a whole lot of fun to help with the kids, ages ranging from 6-15. Though it can be a very difficult task, I had a great time working there from June 26th- July 8th. I'll also hopefully be going back August 7 for week 7 which is the last week of camp. On July 10th, I went up to Amherst College for a Nike Tennis Camp which was a ton of fun, but sadly only lasted a week. Since then, it has been nice to relax and I've been reading a lot, catching up on my netflix (haha), and seeing a lot of my friends whom I haven't seen since school ended. After I come back from camp in August, I'm going to France to visit my sister. I wish I knew French!

  8. And to Katie, my two sisters both went to GW and it's an amazing school. Is it one of your college choices?

  9. I have been quite busy this summer working at Cuddles and Kisses childcare center in Tolland. I also went to cheer camp with our cheer team at Holy Cross College in Worcester MA. My mom and I just returned from Florida where I continued my college search. The rest of my summer will be consumed of working and running cheer practices.

  10. This summer has been crazy busy for me. I've been working at Bob's clothes store in Manchester somewhere between 25 and 40 hours a week, depending on how many times people ask if I can take a shift for them haha. I spent the week visiting colleges in Washington DC and Philadelphia with my dad and little brother two weeks ago. To Katie, I looked at the same 3 schools in DC! The past six weeks, I spent many of my nights dancing at Dance Express; now I get the rest of August off from that. Of course, I've been reading my summer English books, so far so good. I'll be home this coming week then my mom's entire side of the family is headed for Old Orchard Beach in Maine for a week. That should be interesting...11 people in a house with 3 or 4 beds, my brother and cousins will be out on the porch in a tent most likely, hah. And after all that, I've been trying to see friends when I can too. Hope everyone's having a good summer!

  11. This summer I have been working at a daycare in Willington and horseback riding every Saturday. I have also been going on vacations with a friend of mine to places like Misquamicut Beach and Cape Cod. Ironically, I went for a Canoe trip down the Farmington River this summer, too.

  12. So far this summer I've gone to Florida for a huge family shindig, tubed down the Farmington River, been to the beach and drive-in a lot, and generally hung out with friends. And at the end of this week I will be going back to work...alas, the end of the summer is near.

  13. This summer I've been working as a camp counselor out in East Windsor. How exhausting it is working with 6-9 year olds all day...but besides this I've also been to Old Lyme (by the shore), Lake Winnipesaukee (New Hampshire), and the Cape. With soccer and school around the corner, I've been very busy preparing myself for senior year. My last high school summer..almost over =(

  14. Well now now now, where do we begin. This summer I learned quite a bit about a Mr. Benjamin Braz. We started our summer with a bang, quite literally. We went to Crystal Lake the first night of our care-free summer. While at Crystal Lake, we thought it would be fun to try and dynamite fish....it is much harder than you would think. For the next seven or eight weeks Ben and I had to regretfully part our ways. I got a job and had to play dodgeball with little kids all the while getting paid, sad I know. In early August I then went down to Chincoteague, Virginia with a Ms. Jessica Olson where we logged approximately twenty five hours of beach time, which is when I K.O'd these summer reading books. I am now concluding my summer with soccer, diving, and sculpting my body. I had one last adventure, however. It was Ben, Pat McManaman, Eric Venezia and me. The four of us courageously kayaked down the Willy all the way to Eagleville. Our adventure was expected to last 2.5hours but after 5hours and lots of tears....we finally escaped certain death. You may laugh but I will admit I wet my pants in sure terror of the unknown horrors in the water. I am now spending my last waking hours of summer preparing my intellectual stability to duel with one of the greatest minds of Tolland High School...Professor MacArthur. When the endless force of my brain power meets that of Mr. MacArthur's the sheer power will only be comparable to the wizardry powers of Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort with a side of Gandalf the Gray. So I await you Professor. For I, just like the janitor from Goodwill Hunting, am a pure genius. So until we meet, Colton Bridge

  15. This summer has been a whirlwind of emotions, rage, hate, destruction, all in all though, it was fairly enjoyable. From humble beginnings, my summer just like any other, trying to dynamite fish in Crystal Lake. Much like past years, our attempts at catching the "big one" only ended in a lot of sushi, and not California rolls. I and my partner in time/crime Mr. Colton Bridge eventually gave up the search and parted ways in shame. The next stage of my journey involved a ninja, but I won't get into details. After though, I was inspired to find a job. After days of laborious searching, I applied to the biggest long shot of my entire working career, Six Flags New England. I was hired six days later. Now with work experience under my belt, I was ready to take my first vacation. "Away!" I screamed, bags in hand. Next thing I knew I found myself in Rhode Island, home of The Flying Horse Carousel, our nations oldest Carousel. After riding said carousel several times, you can my disappointment in realizing that I was only one state away. I managed to drag myself back home to the sleepy town of Tolland. As I entered my front door I was shocked and appalled to see my good friend Sir Nick Morrone standing there. "Nick," I exclaimed, "What on earth are you doing here?"
"Well," Nick shouted in a booming laugh, "I'm staying at your house for two weeks, hope you have a bed!"
From there on the two of us went on numerous adventures, from becoming Sommer's best minigolfers, to being Hooter's best customers. I was saddened though when Nick told me that his time in Connecticut was dwindling, and he flapped his wings and flew down south to his family. My soul, torn by Nick's migratory patterns, only had only had one last chance for redemption. I agreed to an adventure on the high seas. Four young sailors, with a lot to prove, set out on the adventure of a lifetime. Like in Homer's classic story, we passed many trials and tribulations on our great journey back to the motherland. Our four young heroes never stopped believing, even in the greatest of dangers. Our journey concluded with a fire marshal and state trooper, and in the end we learned a lot, and shared a few laughs along the way. Now home, I can see a recurring theme through all my summer adventures, in the words of Professor Oprah Christian Engelbert of the University of Phoenix "Life is a game of stamina"

  16. I came back from ten days in Maine and the weather was gorgeous! The water was freezing but it always is so no surprise there. The past two days I interned at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington with my aunt. I saw a baby be born and performed post-mortum care on a patient in the ICU, which means I put a dead guy in a body bag. It was interesting and I know now I defintely want to go into nursing. There is now less than a week until school and soccer tryouts are this weekend along with a massive hurricane... should be interesting to see how that pans out.

  17. July was a pretty relaxing month for me so I spent most of it reading and hanging out with friends. August, however, had lots going on. I had championships for swimming in Pittsburgh, which was not a very pretty city. Although I did see a street where people were currently filming a scene for the new batman movie coming out next year. I also went to Florida and visited with our friends down there. I went parasailing and kayaking on the ocean with my friend. It was beautiful! While kayaking I even saw two manatees just chilling in the water. I also saw two baby sea turtles make their way back to the ocean while taking an early morning walk on the beach with my dad. They were so tiny and cute! When I got back home I had to get surgery for my nose and sinuses, which was NOT pleasant. I'm so happy thats over. Sadly summer's almost over, but it's time to kick off our SENIOR YEAR next week! Stay safe with hurricane heading our way!

  18. My summer was pretty busy. I spent the majority of my summer working at Futtner's Family Farm in East Hartford as well as taking a class at MCC. I also took a trip to Niagara Falls with my family. It was beautiful! My summer is just about starting to slow down but I am excited that soccer season is starting again! Its going to be another amazing season.

I hope you had a great summer! :)

  19. I'm glad to hear all of your summers went well! Mine was pretty busy this year. I had a whirlwind of a July between playing basketball until the last week and going on a week-long mission trip to West Virginia. August was a lot more relaxed, I got to spend time with friends and family. In the middle of August I visited 3 New York colleges on my way up to Michigan to visit family. I read (and listened to) Return of the Native on the 14-HOUR-LONG drive up. We also got to spend time at my aunt's house on a lake. Needless to say, I was a little hesitant getting in the water after reading Goldengrove! Now things are settling down and I'm gearing up for volleyball and school again! Hope everyone has electricity now!
